Senior telecoms and infrastructure leaders gathered in London to discuss the evolving TowerCo business model, emerging technologies and the opportunities shaping the sector's future.

BIP UK joined forces with Cellnex Telecom to host an exclusive TowerCo Leaders Breakfast at The Ivy, Canary Wharf, bringing together senior executives from across the telecommunications and digital infrastructure ecosystem for an insightful discussion on the future of the industry.

The event welcomed Simone Battiferri, Chief Operating Officer of Cellnex Telecom, alongside industry leaders and BIP experts, to explore how Tower Companies (TowerCos) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) can adapt to changing market dynamics, evolving customer expectations and emerging technologies.

With the traditional TowerCo model facing new commercial and operational pressures, the discussion focused on a central question: where will the next wave of value creation come from?

Rethinking the Traditional TowerCo Model

Historically, TowerCo growth has been driven largely by increasing tenancy ratios and maximising the commercial potential of existing infrastructure. While this model remains important, participants agreed that the industry must look beyond traditional revenue streams to identify new opportunities across the wider telecommunications value chain.

As market dynamics evolve, TowerCos are increasingly challenged to reconsider their role, explore new service offerings and identify where they can deliver greater value to customers.

Balancing Innovation with Commercial Viability

Emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), automation, digital twins, edge computing and advanced energy solutions, present significant opportunities to improve efficiency, optimise infrastructure and unlock new business models.

However, technological innovation alone is not enough.

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the importance of establishing commercially viable investment models. While new technologies offer considerable potential, questions remain around who should fund their deployment, how costs should be shared and where the financial returns will ultimately sit.

For TowerCos and MNOs alike, the ability to balance innovation with sustainable economics will be critical.

Building More Flexible Partnerships

The evolving relationship between TowerCos and MNOs was another key area of discussion.

As customer requirements change and investment priorities shift, traditional commercial arrangements may need to become more flexible.

Participants explored how closer collaboration, greater adaptability and new partnership models could help both parties navigate market pressures while maintaining a sustainable balance between investment, service delivery and commercial returns.

The conversation also considered the potential for further market consolidation, alongside the role of regulation and investment frameworks in supporting the industry's long-term development.

Looking Ahead: What Needs to Change?

One of the most thought-provoking questions of the morning came from Faith Nyabuto, who challenged participants to consider what they would want to see change if the same group reconvened in five years.

Would the industry benefit from a broader market reset? Could relationships between TowerCos, MNOs and regulators evolve? Will new funding models emerge, or will the sector fundamentally redefine where infrastructure value is created?

While there were no simple answers, the discussion highlighted a shared recognition that the next phase of industry growth will require fresh thinking, collaboration and a willingness to challenge established approaches.

Continuing the Conversation

At BIP, we believe that bringing together industry leaders to exchange perspectives, challenge assumptions and explore emerging opportunities is essential to helping organisations navigate change.

Our TowerCo Leaders Breakfast, hosted in collaboration with Cellnex Telecom, provided an opportunity to examine the challenges and opportunities facing the sector and consider how businesses can position themselves for the future.

We would like to thank Simone Battiferri, Jamie Hayes and Steve Cray from Cellnex Telecom for their contribution, alongside our BIP colleagues Sebastian Varela-Garcia, Paolo Marton, Mattia Auteri, Ramon Poch and Queralt Grané Porta.

Our thanks also go to everyone who joined us and contributed to such an open and engaging discussion.

As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the future of TowerCos will depend not only on the infrastructure they own, but on the value they can create.
