New Point of View explores how TowerCos must evolve beyond passive infrastructure to unlock future growth.

BIP UK, the international consultancy focused on business transformation, in collaboration with Bayes Business School, has published a new Point of View titled Beyond Towers: The Next Evolution of the TowerCo Model, examining how telecom tower companies (TowerCos) are evolving to meet the demands of the digital economy.

The study highlights how the global TowerCo market is expected to grow from $61 billion in 2024 to $125 billion by 2030, driven by increasing mobile data consumption, 5G densification, infrastructure sharing and the emergence of AI and edge computing.

As the sector evolves, leading TowerCos are already deploying AI-driven predictive maintenance, digital twins and automated monitoring solutions to reduce site downtime, optimise field operations and improve asset performance. According to the study, early deployments of these technologies are already helping operators lower maintenance costs, reduce unnecessary truck rolls and improve operational visibility across large infrastructure portfolios.

While the industry has historically focused on passive infrastructure ownership, the study finds that TowerCos are now transitioning into broader digital infrastructure platforms. The research identifies a strategic shift from scale-driven growth toward operational efficiency, data-driven services and technology-enabled infrastructure models.

“The TowerCo industry is reaching a critical turning point,” comments Sebastian Varela-Garcia, Industry Director at BIP UK. “In mature markets, growth through acquisitions alone is no longer enough. The organisations that succeed will be those able to maximise value from existing assets, integrate digital capabilities and create new service models around connectivity.”

The study places particular emphasis on the European market, where large-scale M&A activity has slowed and operators are instead prioritising higher tenancy ratios, process standardisation, energy optimisation and adjacent infrastructure opportunities such as Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), small cells, private networks and edge data centres.

A key finding from the study is that operational transformation is becoming just as important as infrastructure investment. TowerCos are increasingly facing challenges linked to fragmented local practices, inconsistent operating models and resistance to standardisation across markets, all of which can slow transformation programmes and reduce operational efficiency.

According to the study, organisations that successfully combine operational transformation with AI-enabled technologies will be best positioned to lead the next phase of industry growth.

The research also highlights the growing importance of active equipment hosting, energy management and technology-enabled operational services as TowerCos expand beyond traditional infrastructure models. Smart city infrastructure, AI-enabled audits and predictive maintenance are all expected to play a growing role as the sector continues to evolve.

Mattia Auteri, Industry Partner at BIP UK, added: “TowerCos are becoming increasingly central to the future of digital infrastructure. This evolution is not just about technology, it is about building operating models that are scalable, sustainable and capable of supporting the next generation of connectivity services.”

The study draws on research conducted jointly by BIP UK and MBA students from Bayes Business School, alongside independent analysis and industry expertise from BIP’s telecoms specialists.
