BIP UK and IBDE Bring Industry Leaders Together to Explore Digital Infrastructure in the Age of AIBIP UK partnered with the International Business and Diplomatic Exchange (IBDE) to host a senior-level roundtable examining the challenges and opportunities facing digital infrastructure as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the sector.
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to accelerate demand for digital connectivity and computing power, management consultancy BIP UK has partnered with the International Business and Diplomatic Exchange (IBDE) to explore the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of digital infrastructure across Europe.
Hosted at the London offices of global law firm Freshfields, the event brought together senior leaders and industry experts to discuss the evolving demands on digital infrastructure, the investment required to support future growth, and the strategic decisions facing businesses and policymakers across Europe.
The roundtable, titled Digital Infrastructure and Transformation in the Age of AI, provided an opportunity for participants to exchange perspectives on some of the most pressing issues facing the sector, from energy constraints and digital sovereignty to the changing role of telecommunications infrastructure.
A central theme was the growing importance of energy availability, with power increasingly emerging as a critical constraint on digital infrastructure development. As AI adoption accelerates and demand for data processing capacity increases, securing reliable and sustainable energy supplies will be essential to supporting future growth.
The discussion also explored the evolving role of Tower Companies (TowerCos), the implications of cloud market concentration, and the growing importance of digital sovereignty as governments and businesses consider how best to protect and strengthen their digital capabilities.
Participants examined the contrasting strategic approaches being taken by the United States and Europe, particularly in relation to investment, innovation and infrastructure development. The conversation highlighted the need to attract significant investment into European digital infrastructure, alongside the importance of fostering competition to encourage innovation, creativity and faster progress.
The interconnected nature of these challenges was a recurring theme throughout the discussion, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between industry, investors, policymakers and technology providers.
As part of the roundtable, BIP UK's Sebastian Varela-Garcia and Paolo Marton shared insights from research undertaken in collaboration with Cambridge Judge Business School, contributing further perspectives on the future of the TowerCo sector and its evolving business models.
Mattia Auteri of BIP UK also shared closing reflections, bringing together the key themes discussed and emphasising the importance of continued dialogue as the sector navigates a period of significant transformation.
The event was organised in partnership with IBDE, with Matthew Hood bringing together participants from across the industry. The discussion was chaired by Vivienne Artz OBE, whose leadership encouraged an open and engaging exchange of views.
As AI continues to accelerate change across the digital economy, BIP UK remains committed to bringing together industry expertise, research and strategic insight to help organisations navigate the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of digital infrastructure.
